Shelter: One Man's Journey from Homelessness to Hope
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (December, 1998)
Authors: Bobby Burns and David A. Snow
Average review score:

From Bobby Burns, author of SHELTER
I wrote SHELTER to show what homelessness feels and looks like from the inside of a homeless shelter in Tucson, Arizona. It was important for me to be honest about what landed me in a homeless shelter a few years ago. In SHELTER, I write about men who shared the same address: 300 E. Benson Hwy. Their stories gave me courage and hope. This experience taught me that I am no better than Joe homeless. I came away educated about the problems and issues of homelessness. My education continues today in a advocacy role. I serve on the Primavera Foundation Board of Directors, a local homeless non profit organization in Tucson.

Five things you can do to help the homeless in your city: 1. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen. 2. Teach a homeless child how to read. 3. Write letters to the editor on behalf of the homeless in your local newspaper. 4. Hire the homeless. 5. Volunteer at a Homeless Shelter.

Let's fight homelessness together.

Thanks!

Bobby Burns END

Great Read!
SHELTER offers a new refreshinh look at homelessness. The book will offer many people hope. The author writes about a wide range of issues in simple ENGLISH. Society should read Shelter. I came away with a different perspective about homelessness.

This IS life in a shelter
Ever wonder what being homeless and living in a shelter really means? Read this book. It is amazing! It captures everything about a shelter--the smells, the volunteers, the other guests, the managers, the misconceptions, etc. This should be required reading for every person in America, especially those who say they want to help end homelessness.

Best Easy Day Hikes Grand Canyon

A good guide, but not up-to-date.
Our family found this to be a good guide to Grand Canyon trails during our visit in August, 2000. The descriptions of the Bright Angel trail and South Kaibab trail were accurate. However, the Rim trail, which is described in detail in the book, seems to no longer exist. I don't know who's at fault. The NPS does a terrible job of marking its Grand Canyon trails. Don't assume that every trail described in the book will be there. Check with an NPS employee first.

A Handy Pocket Size Guide to South & North Rim Hikes
For those folks looking for a handy guide to easy Grand Canyon trails they can't go wrong with this guide. Each of the 17 descriptions includes basic facts such as trail mileage, elevation change, water availability, type of trail, directions to the trailhead and other information. Each hike is described in appropriate detail including comments about the vegetation. Upon reaching the hike's destination the author has excellent descriptions of the views encountered. Adkison's writing style is clear and easy to understand. Each hike has an easy to understand map. For those wanting to pick out more canyon details I recommend the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Grand Canyon National Park Topo Map. His mix of hikes includes not only those where one would meet a lot of other people but those where one is likely to enjoy much solitude. Both rim trails and below the rim trails are included in the book. The handy small size of this book makes it easy to carry in one's pocket or pack.

City Smart Tucson

A good overview
I bought this because I was going to Tucson on vacation, with an eye to perhaps retiring there eventually. I found the book useful, although a bit superficial. Still, it's worth the price.

Informative and entertaining
I live in Tucson and get a lot of out-of-town friends and relatives passing through. I put this book in their hands and turn them loose. It covers just about everything a tourist would want and need to know, and then some, and the writing is pretty funny, but not stupid. The book is organized very usefully, with restaurants and attractions and motels listed by what section of the city they're in. Even I didn't know some of the things in this book, and I've lived here nearly 30 years. I just wish they'd come out with an update, because some of the restaurants have closed since this was published.

The Civil War in the Western Territories: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (August, 1985)
Author: Ray C. Colton
Average review score:

very good general description
Colton gives a good account over the Far West, but fails to add proper maps for the better understanding of the single engagements. I'm still searching for the ultimate book 'bout the Transmississippi theatre.

The Civil War in the Western Territories
This book was a very interesting one. I liked the fact that Colton covered several different conflict that happened during the Civil War. In the first chapter he gives some background on eac of the territories. In chapet two he talkes about the Confederat action in each of these states. Chapter three gives some background on the troops fron Colorado. The chapter that really impressed me was chapter seven, this chapter was about the effect the indians had on the War.In the last chapter he puts some closure to what the states did after the War. There was one thing that I did not like about the book and that was the way he used names in this book. Everytime he used a name he would use the full name for example Lieutnant colonel Edward R. Eyrethe first time and after that he could have said Lieutenant Colonel Eyre. This made me very frustrated having to read the long name every time. Overall this book worked for me. I liked the structure of this book. He used some good maps and photos of some of the individuals that were talked about in the book. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Civil War in the West.

The Colorado River in Grand Canyon : a comprehensive guide to its natural and human history

Time to revise this!
I just returned from an 18-day private trip and found the "Blue Bible" worth packing in my day box for the whole trip. However, some storms have come through and many of the rapids are now misclassified. Anyone with a moderate interest in life around them should tote the latest version of this book along with them down the canyon; I was able to ID snakes, bugs and landmarks. But find a companion who has run the river more recently than Larry to tell you whether to scout the next rapid.

P.S. Hey Larry, if you need some help...

Grand Canyon Private River Trip Guide Book
This is THE book to have for anyone taking a private river trip through the Grand Canyon. It's the only guide book that shows all of the camp sites and their relative size. It also rates the difficulty of all of the rapids. There should be one on every raft.

For those quiet moments in camp the book contains a lot of information about the history and geology of the Grand Canyon as well as a lot of other information.

Discovering Tucson: A Guide to the Old Pueblo . . . and Beyond

Authors: Carolyn Grossman and Suzanne Myal

How to understand, enjoy, and shop
If you already have one of the major guidebooks to Tucson, this is an adequate supplement. The information seems geared more towards long-term visitors than day-trippers. If you want to know where to buy shoes or cd's this is the book for you.

But it's not an entertaining travel companion. The writing is drab and cliche-ridden--the word "great" seems to appear on every page.

Get around Tucson
This is a good guide for the out of towner or the local who wants the inside scoop on attractions, restaurants etc. It is broken down into day trips, attractions, a&e, outdoor stuff, shopping. We've visited several places we wouldn't have known about and eaten at a couple of restaurants listed. Maps of different areas are included. Let's you know what's around Tucson and there is much to do!

Kidnapped from That Land: The Government Raids on the Short Creek Polygamists (Publications in Mormon Studies, Vol. 9)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (March, 1999)

A sad commentary on majority interference with minorities...
I found the book in a Utah bookstore the same weekend I first visited the town. We were staying with a family that we had business with. We were not aware the town is polygamous but were able to figure it out fairly quickly. Later we told the folks we had stayed with about the book and they had never heard of it. We loaned them our copy and one comment they made was the number of innaccuracies listed. None of them were particularly major but they were numerous. We were favorably impressed by the people we met. My wife visited there again last year and stayed for nearly two weeks. She says that the depiction of the community in the book really doesn't match what she saw during her stay. We did feel that the book didn't take a "mainline" Mormon viewpoint versus the community's minority viewpoint.

excellent
Very well researched. A valuableresearch tool for a very controversial and obscure subject

The Last Chance Ranch: A Story About Football, Gang Members, and Learning to Play by the Rules
Published in Hardcover by Longstreet Press (November, 1996)
Authors: Mark Emmons and Emmons Mark
Average review score:

Mark Emmons is one author to watch for in the future.
This was a difficult book to put down. Watching these characters travel from street warriors to the football field was heart-warming. It gave one faith and hope that these young men are not beyond habilitation, they need guidance and teachers...and a few found it on a football field. They found something pure that they could be proud of, an excellent read.

The "Hoosiers" of football
The testimonials of the juvenile felons separating sections of the book add a true realistic flavor to the story. I did not want to stop reading the book. I wanted more. In fact, I shed a few tears upon completion of the book

Mit-Ro-Don
Published in Paperback by Sterling House Pub (31 January, 2001)
Author: Daniel Spires
Average review score:

Spires¿ first science fiction novel is a big hit
Board your Goldstream Fighter spacecraft, launch and deploy for combat! Join the Earth Task Force with your benevolent alien allies, the Mit-Ro-Don, and courageously defend the Earth from all but certain destruction at the hands of the evil Chit-Chit-Kunak!

Spires' first science fiction novel is a big hit, a thoroughly engrossing read, at a very quick pace. Action on almost every page! A thrilling, highly creative tale of desperate space battles of gargantuan proportions. And the good, hard science will appeal to many readers.

Spires personal aviation and military experience shows frequently, as we follow the day-to-day military adventures of Earth volunteer Jim DeLucca, in a manner reminiscent of Heinlein's Starship Troopers (but without the fascism!).

The action is so fast and furious that one does wish at times that Spires had slowed down a bit to flesh out the characters, but this is but a minor criticism. All in all, an outstanding debut, and we eagerly await more, much more from Dan Spires!

buzz likes this book!
this is one of my favorite novels of all time. it has everything! flying saucers, alien wars, shocking plot twists, and even Bob Hope! it's the story of a guy who joins forces with an alien culture living on Earth who convince the world to join up with them to stop an evil alien armada hell-bent on destroying the world. if you like 'war of the worlds', you'll enjoy this even more. it has mr. explosion!'s personal seal of approval, and what more could you ask for than that?

Better than the phone bok
I use this book to find new businesses to market to. The contact names are right on and the employee sizes are pretty accurate too. They have a CDROM available if you ask for it, which is easier to use for pulling up large mailing lists. It's been with us for years, just beware of the small type!
